Strengths: Strong, brave, observant, determined, protective, disciplined, dedicated, hard working
Weaknesses: Stubborn, ridged, proud, gruff, occasional flashbacks at inopportune times, not very understanding, perfectionist, pushes limits
Goals: To raise a family of his own one day
Fears: That one day he’ll be told he can no longer work for the PD and he’ll be cast aside like he was with the Marines… also balloons… they give him the heebie jeebies
Secrets: That there are times, when he regrets his choice to join the military… these times are usually when his back and leg are giving him trouble… which is another secret he keeps to himself, that the injuries still cause him pain, and that despite the years, he still occasionally has nightmares and flashbacks.
Likes: Order, work, his family, his mother, nonfiction books, guns, coffee
Dislikes: Confined spaces, loud bangs, criminals, people who break the rules, cats, peppermint flavoured anything, people who are lazy and or stupid
Overall Personality: For the most part, Gabe is a pretty simple guy He’s serious, he’s honorable, and he likes to keep mostly to himself.. He doesn’t let his emotions out, nor does he care too, they are there, he just prefers to think they don’t really exist. Extreme displays of any kind of emotion give him the willies, and he is definitely not a fan. He is very stoic, and strong willed, and has remarkable self control, all things that years of intense military training has taught him. Gabe is very bound by duty and right and wrong, and has a very firm grasp on where he stands. He is fairly conservative in most of his ideas, and while too stubborn to admit when one of those ideas is wrong, he isn’t so pig headed that you need to beat him over the head repeatedly to get him to change his mind… he will just do it in his own time, and his own way and of course, of his own free will… it had nothing to do with anyone else saying anything at all. He is very strict, both on himself and others, and loathes the whole ‘rules were made to be broken’ philosophy. Doesn’t matter if its littering or murder, there are rules against it, and you best not break them in front of him. He, as mentioned, is very stubborn as well as proud. He hates to admit when he needs help, hates to show weakness in front of anyone, he is quite protective of people in general really, he cares deeply about keeping everyone safe and out of harms way, and he has no trouble laying himself down to do so. It makes him quite brave and yes, even a little heroic, and in that sense, he will always put other people ahead of himself. He does have a gentler side. He doesn’t make friends easily, but when he does, he’s dedicated and loyal for life. He enjoys the camaraderie and brotherhood of the police force, just like he enjoyed that aspect of the marines as well. He’s gotten better about relaxing, letting his hair down a bit, but it really only happens with a select few people. When he wants to, he has quite a dry wit and sense of humor, but again, it’s few people who see that side of him. It’s not that he doesn’t trust people, or doesn’t let them in, he’s just very private and doesn’t really believe anyone else needs to know what he’s thinking or feeling. People tend to see him as distant and cold, until the manage to get to know him and see that the rod up his ass is removable at times.
all reason aside i just can't deny, love the guy...
Hometown: River City
History: Gabe was born and raised in River City. His childhood was relatively run of the mill. He was an only child to a an all American, working, middle class family. His father was a foreman in a steel manufacturing plant, and his mother ran a daycare out of their home. The Monroe’s didn’t always have a lot, but they had what they needed. Gabe was always very close to his mother, a self proclaimed Momma’s boy, and proud of it. His dad of course taught him the important things about being a man and all that, and though his love was sometimes the ‘tough’ variety, he was good to his only son. Their family sometimes seemed like it was plucked out of the 1950’s, the hardworking, somewhat distant father, the homemaker mother, the almost too boy next door kid, there were times when he was growing up that an outsider could really look in and think it was all just a part of some bad sitcom from back in the day. It wasn’t a perfect childhood, not by any means, but it was very average.
Through his younger years, his father was strict, and much like Gabe is now, not one to really show emotions, probably where Gabe got those qualities himself. Though it wasn’t all a learned behavior. Gabe was always a serious child. While he’d go play with the other kids in the neighborhood, he refused to play the stupid pretend or imagination games. That didn’t really change as he got older, the only time he took a drama class was in 8th grade because he had too, and he nearly clawed his own eyes out. Gabe’s teen years were fairly easy. He was intelligent, attractive and athletic. It wasn’t hard to see why he would be popular among his peers. High school was probably the most active time for Gabe in terms of an actual social life. He had found himself a sweetheart, was a star player on the football team, and was well on his way to earning a scholarship to any college with a football program that he wanted to attend.
That really wasn’t something he ever planned to do. Gabe’s family has a long history of serving in the military, his father was really the only one who chose not to go the career military route, but still served in the army for 5 years when he first turned 18. It was generally accepted that Gabe would follow the same path, putting off college until after he served. Gabe had different plans though, he saw that there was no greater choice he could make than dedicating his life to service. When he graduated high school and turned 18, he left everything behind and joined basic training for the Marines. The young man showed great aptitude, and found that in those ranks, he found where he fit in. From the ages of 18 to 25, he proudly served as a member of the corps, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. Though he would never tell anyone this, the time was not an easy one. Serving his country during war time, he saw plenty of active duty. He witnessed things, did things, that still haunt him. Still, he would never have quit of his own volition. When he was 25, while in Iraq, he was caught in the cross fire of an IED. While he was luckier than some in his squad who died in the blast, he was badly injured. He took the brunt of the shrapnel in his leg and lower back, leaving a mass of scars and tissue damage that pains him to this day. His plans of serving for life were cut short when the injury resulted in his being honorably discharged.
He returned to the States a broken man. Diagnosed with PTSD, which he refused to acknowledge with a mind full of nightmares and no idea what he was supposed to do with his life, he was lost. He returned home to River City, and lived ghost like for a year during his recovery. It was thanks to family and old friends that returned to his side that he had the strength to pull through. One of his close friends from High School, Kevin Sanchez, was pivotal in his recovery, forcing him out of his shell, and embracing him with open arms into his rather loud and numerous family. As Gabe turned back into the man he was, Kevin became his closest friend, and still is. It did take a full year of hard physio therapy (made more difficult by Gabe’s refusal to take any of the prescribed pain medication) to get the man physically back to where he’d been. The emotional and mental journey to rebuild him was just as difficult. But by the time he turned 26, he was ready to get back into the world.
He joined the River City Police Department, which offered him the closest thing he could get to his military aspirations. Two years onto the force and he was promoted to Detective. Working alongside a gruff senior officer, he found that the intricacies and subtleties of homicide investigation were well suited to him, and despite himself, he finally stopped mourning the loss of the life he thought he was supposed to have, and enjoying the one he did. Gabe proved to be just as diligent and competent at investigations as he once was running his squad. Recently, his partner of almost 8 years retired from the force. Not really all that enthused about having to deal with a new partner, he was pleasantly surprised when one of Kevin’s younger siblings, Eva, filled the bill. He is a far cry from what he was like 9 years ago when he returned from overseas, and though he will never be a social butterfly, he is no longer the completely closed off, impossible man to get to know he was before.
